SCiMA Registration

Safeguarding Children in Martial Arts (SCiMA) registration is for individual coaches and athletes in the martial arts sector. Once registered you will have access to a range of resources. If you are a coach at a martial arts schools or clubs that does not have membership of a Sport England recognised National Governing Body (NGB), then you may not have the opportunity to take advantage of the many benefits that NGB status brings. SCiMA encourages membership of the NGBs and acts as an 'interim' stage for those schools, clubs and associations to ensure that they are meeting the minimum operating standards required for coaching, child protection and safer recruitement practice.

Regulated martial arts sector

Sport England Recognised National Governing Bodies

If you are a member of the Sport England recognised National Governing Body (NGB) with Coaching credentials that are recognised by your NGB then you can register with SCiMA:

• SCiMA NGB Registration

Your NGB will confirm your SCiMA NGB Registration status which is determined by successfully completing NGB approved coaching training, safeguarding training and first aid training.

• SCiMA Gold Registration - Coaching Qualification (NVQ Level 3 or above or equivalent), Safeguarding Training and First Aid Training
• SCiMA Silver Registration - Coaching Qualification (NVQ Level 2 or equivalent), Safeguarding Training and First Aid Training
• SCiMA Bronze Registration - Coaching Qualification (NVQ Level 1 or equivalent), Safeguarding Training and First Aid Training
• SCiMA Associate Registration - Assistant or Trainee Coach (under supervision) Safeguarding Training and First Aid Training

To coach unsupervised you must have successfully completed the NGB Coaching Qualification, Safeguarding Training and First Aid Training.

Other Governing Bodies

If you are member of another governing body not recognised by Sport Emgland (non-NGB) with Coaching credentials that are recognised by your governing body then you can register with SCiMA:

If your school, club or association falls currently into the unregulated sector and you are not be a member of an NGB or other governing body, then you can still register for SCiMA:

A martial arts focus

SCiMA provide an opprotunity for martial artists to access recources and materials which will provide you with a good understanding a range of subject areas which impact the pratice of martial arts in the United Kingdom, including child protection and safeguarding.

When registered, the online learning and development can be accessed for a nominal fee of £10.00 per year. This will enable you with individual access to your learing and development programme and learning record as part of your continuous professional development. Once you have completed your online programme you will be able to print your certificates and qualify for the SCiMA card.

The online training provides you with an opportunity to explore thse subject matter in your own time and enables you to develop a better understanding. SCiMA also encourge coaches to attend face to face training, seminars and event provided by the NGBs and other recognised organisation in the field such as the NSPCC.

SCiMA registration requirements include the use of a recent colour photograph. This photograph will be used on your SCiMA membership account (form); and appear on your SCiMA card.

SCiMA card is intended, over time, to evidence that you have successfully undertaken the SCiMA online learning and development programme.

What does SCiMA do?

SCiMA is focused on implementing child protection policy, developing safer recruitment practice and enhancing coaching standards with a view to professionalising martial arts instruction, in the United Kingdom and partner organisations in the Republic of Ireland.

SCiMA services will include:

• SCiMA registered martial arts coach database
• Child protection and safeguarding training
• Safer recruitment practice
• Anti-bullying awareness
• First aid essentials

Although self-governing, SCiMA will work in partnership with national and international organisations to promoting best practice in martial arts coaching and organisational management. This includes local and national government organisations, in the UK and internationally.
